Thought For Today: “The Newness of the Old Testament”

Just because it’s in the Old Testament doesn’t mean it’s old, nor does it mean we’re to leave it untouched, unread, and not follow its instruction.

Jesus said that a disciple should be a like the head of a house bringing out both new and old treasure.

“Therefore every scribe instructed concerning the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure things new and old.” (Matthew 13:52)

Jesus would often bring out truths found in the Old Testament, but then bring new understanding to their meaning. Several times He would say, “You have heard it said…but I tell you.”

Jesus never came to abolish what was written in the Law or the Prophets, but rather He came to fulfill them and says that anyone who sets these truths to the side for whatever reason will be considered least in the Kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:17-19)

The Apostle Paul said, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
