Thought For Today: “The Magi’s Gifts”
The Magi brought with them gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
“When they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” (Matthew 2:11)
Gold represents wealth and it is a gift for a king (Jesus is the King of Kings)
Frankincense is the sap of a tree that was dried and hardened to use as incense to worship God. Thus it is a gift for Jesus deity (Jesus was the Son of God)
Myrrh is a fragrant perfume that was used to anoint the dead, to embalm and preserve them. (Jesus was the Sacrificial Lamb of God who took away the sins of the world)
From these gifts we see the three aspects of Christ’s nature. Gold is to the One who is King, Myrrh to the One who will die, and Frankincense to worship God.
