Today’s Devotional: “The Great Equalizer”

Most products we buy have an expiration date, and knowing these dates is important, whether you’re buying milk or, better yet, getting ready to drink it. When you buy a car, you know its expiration as well. It’s when the warranty runs out.

Just about everything carries an expiration date. But there’s an expiration date most of us don’t like to think about: our own lives.

Solomon said, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1-2a)

Moses says in no uncertain terms that life has a beginning and an end. “You turn men back to dust, saying, ‘Return to dust, O sons of men.’” (Psalm 90:3)

This was something the Lord said to Adam at the very beginning.

“By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” (Genesis 3:19)

To make sure we get the point, Moses writes, “You sweep men away in the sleep of death; they are like the new grass of the morning — though in the morning it springs up new, by evening it is dry and withered.” (Psalm 90:5-6)

Basically, Moses says, “One minute you’re here, the next you’re gone.”

If there’s one thing we can take away from this, it’s that our time on earth is short, so we’d better make the most of it.

All we get is one shot at life before eternity, so we’d better get it right. So, what we need to do is ask God how we’re supposed to do this.

Moses then offers us the perfect prayer.

“Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12)
