Silence Can Be Golden

If we would just keep silent for a moment, long enough to stop all the questioning and doubt about what is going on inside, and if we would just silence our hearts and listen, then we would be amazed at what we would hear and learn from God.

When Jesus came into the temple, instead of listening to what the Lord was saying through Him, the Scribes and religious leaders continued to question and doubt.

On one such occasion they even tried to get Jesus to say something incriminating so they could hand him over to the government and prosecute Him.

They asked if it was right to pay taxes to Caesar.

Understanding their intent to either alienate His Jewish followers or incriminate Him before Roman authority, Jesus answered in such a way that left them speechless and amazed.

It says, “They marveled at His answer and kept silent.” (Luke 20:26)

The Lord God of heaven and earth is in His temple, but instead of listening to His words of life and instruction we speak our doubts.

The prophet Habakkuk gives us this advice. “The Lord is in His holy temple. Let all the earth keep silence before Him.” (Habakkuk 2:20)

Solomon said, “Do not be rash with your mouth, and let not your heart utter anything hastily before God. For God is in heaven, and you on earth; therefore let your words be few.” (Ecclesiastes 5:2)

When we take time to read God’s word and pray; we literally come into His presence, all with the purpose of hearing His words of grace and mercy.

“Let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it.” (Hebrews 4:16)

So let’s keep our doubts silent and trust that God knows what is best and that He will give us the answers we need.

Silence then truly can be golden.
