Order My Steps
“Guide my steps by your word, so I will not be overcome by any evil.” (Psalms 119:133)
A popular gospel song, “Order My Steps,” comes from this verse. The chorus line reads,
Order my steps in Your Word, Dear Lord
Lead me, guide me every day
Send Your anointing, Father, I pray
Order my steps in Your Word, yes
Order my steps in Your Word
And here’s the heart of the message. God is the one who orders and guides our steps by His word, not the other way around. We do not to order our own steps, God does, and God orders our steps through His word. Then we can be assured that the forces of evil will not overcome us.
The Psalmist pleads with the Lord to guide his ways, which the Psalmist knows can only come in and through God’s word.
The Bible shows us what we were, what we are, and what we shall be. It makes us wise and shows us what we need to know, especially our sin. It is better and all the gold in the world, and is to be desired more than the tastiest treat.
“The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them Your servant is warned, and in keeping them there is great reward. Who can understand his errors? Cleanse me from secret faults.” (Psalm 19:7-12)
Through God’s word we know the grace, mercy, and justice of God. It gives the wisdom philosophers have sought for ages.
Therefore, by Your Word, O Lord, order our steps.
