Obedience Isn’t Difficult
How often do we hear that to obey this or that command out of the Bible is too difficult, or it’s unrealistic given the circumstances we’re faced with, or the society we live in?
All this posturing is nothing less than rationalization, because of our desire to live our lives the way we want. But what God says is that obedience isn’t that hard, in fact it’s quite easy.
The Lord said, “Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach. It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask, ‘Who will ascend into heaven to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?’ Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask, ‘Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?’ No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it.” (Deuteronomy 30:11-14)
To make it even easier, the Lord gave a new covenant where the law would no longer be written upon tablets of stone to be followed, but written within our hearts where it can be lived out.
“This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.” (Hebrews 8:10)
Therefore, obedience to the Lord and to His word isn’t impossible or even difficult, because God has done everything to render it accessible and doable, even to the point of sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to die upon the cross in order to make it so.
God’s will and way are, therefore, made known through His word, which He writes upon our hearts, and we now desire to obey because of how much we love Him.
