Melchizedek’s Were Not

Melchizedek was the King of Salem. After Abraham defeated four kings that had taken Lot and his family captive when they defeated the five king of the Jordan Valley, Melchizedek met and blessed him, and Abraham gave him a tenth of the spoils, Genesis 14:18-20.

Why is this important, because Melchizedek, whom no genealogy was ever kept, was “made like the Son of God” being a priest forever, Hebrews 7:3.

Of the coming Messiah, whom King David called Lord, not only would He be king and a judge, but also He would be a priest forever after or according to the order of Melchizedek, Psalm 110; cf. Hebrews 7.

So the Melchizedek priesthood was reserved for one person and one person only, the Messiah, Jesus Christ, who through His death and resurrection has gone before us offering Himself as that perfect sacrifice obtaining through His blood our eternal redemption, Hebrews 9:11-14.

Therefore, as the writer of Hebrews states, “He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.” (Hebrews 8:6 NKJV)

Therefore, since no genealogy exists for anyone to trace back to, and since the priesthood paid tithes to Melchizedek through Abraham, no human being today could ever be a priest after this lineage.

So who are we?

“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9 NKJV)

Earlier Peter said that we were of a holy priesthood, living stones built up together as a spiritual house to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ, 2 Peter 2:5.

While we are a priesthood, we like Abraham offer up spiritual sacrifices to Jesus Christ who is a our Great High Priest, who is made like Melchizedek, a priest forever, our King of Righteousness and Peace, Hebrews 7:3.
