Living for Jesus While We’re Waiting

Today’s Devotional: “Living for Jesus While We’re Waiting”

There’s a beautiful example of how we’re supposed to be living until the Lord returns. It comes from an obscure individual in the Bible names Mephibosheth.

Mephibosheth was crippled from being dropped as a child. To avoid detection, he hid out in a desolate land, Lo Debar. He was sought after by King David and restored to the palace always to sit at the King’s table.

Mephibosheth had it made.

But due to rebellion by Absalom, King David had to leave Jerusalem, and Mephibosheth, being crippled, couldn’t follow, but instead remained behind.

So how did he live while his king was away?

“Now Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king. And he had not cared for his feet, nor trimmed his mustache, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he returned in peace.” (2 Samuel 19:24)

While Mephibosheth remained in Jerusalem, he dressed and lived in such a way as to share in the sorrow and suffering that his lord, King David, would have been suffering.

Are we living for the Lord’s return? How are we conducting ourselves until that time?

Mephibosheth lived in a way that was honoring to his lord, showing his devotion.

We need to live in such a way that the world around us sees our love and devotion to our King, Jesus, until He returns or until we’re called home.

Jesus said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” (Luke 9:23)

Concerning how we are to live this life, the Apostle Paul said we are to “always (be) carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus’ sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.” (2 Corinthians 4:10-11)
