Keep Your Word

No one likes to be lied to. No one likes to be made a promise and it not being kept.

One of the fastest ways to destroy our witness for Jesus Christ is not to keep our word, because then we’ll be considered untrustworthy.

In giving the people the Law of God, Moses said, “This is the thing which the Lord has commanded: If a man makes a vow to the Lord, or swears an oath to bind himself by some agreement, he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.” (Numbers 30:1-2 NKJV)

Basically God is commanding the people to keep their word.

We need to not just say what we mean, but we need to mean what we say. Our word, the words we speak should hold the same weight as a signed document. The signature at the bottom of a contract is only as good as the person who is doing the signing.

If we say we’re going to do something, the Bible tells us to make sure we follow through, make sure we keep our word, or “Let not your mouth lead you into sin” (Ecclesiastes 5:5a).

It’s by this that people know that we not only have integrity, but that we know the Lord. Keeping our word is a reflection of the Lord who is within us.
The Apostle John said, “But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.” (1 John 2:5 NKJV)

And to add one more caveat to this teaching is that God keeps His word, and therefore so should we.

We’re told that all the promises of God are true and faithful. And so if God keeps His word, then He expects us to keep ours, and that’s because when we give our word to someone, we’re also giving it to the Lord.

So let’s keep our word.
