Healing at the Foot of the Cross

Today’s 333 Devotional: “Healing at the Foot of the Cross”

God brought His healing to all humanity at the cross of Christ.

When looking at the promise of the Messiah in his 53rd chapter, Isaiah said, “Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows.” (Isaiah 53:4a)

The word, “has borne,” means to lift up and bear away. It means to remove. It was used of the scapegoat the Lord used to carry away the sins of Israel (Leviticus 16:22). The word “grief” means sickness or disease. The word “carried” denotes a heavy burden, and the word “sorrows” means pain.

How did the Messiah remove our sickness and disease? How did the Messiah carry away the heavy burden of pain (spiritual, emotional, and physical)? It was through what He did upon the cross; as Isaiah goes on to tell us.

“But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)

It was through the sacrifice of the Messiah that God’s peace is ours. Jesus, the Messiah, the Son of God, the second person of the Godhead brought wholeness and salvation, a right relationship with God, along with healing of body, soul, and spirit through His death on the cross.

At the foot of the cross God brought His healing touch to all those who believe. Through His death, Jesus brought wholeness back to humanity, that which was lost back in the Garden of Eden.

Sin not only separates us from God, but brings with it sickness, disease, and death. Jesus came to set us free from all three.

And so, Jesus’s question to the man and the Pool of Bethesda is the same question He is asking us, “Do you want to be made well?” (John 5:6). Or as it says in the King James Version, “Wilt thou be made whole?”

Our healing waits, and it is found only at the foot of the cross.
