God’s Wrath is Directive

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness.” (Romans 1:18)

The Greek word for ‘wrath’ is translated as anger, but not the type of anger that is emotive. It is not emotional outbursts that end as quickly as they begin. Rather it is decisive anger. It is an anger that comes through thoughtful process leading to a decision.

When used of God, it is an anger that is righteous and just, because is an anger that stands against sin and hates evil, and facilitates justice against them both.

Jesus said God’s wrath is directed towards those who fail to believe.

“He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” (John 3:36)

Paul talks about two types of people whom God’s wrath is directed towards. The first are those who are ungodly and/or unrighteous. These are individuals who fail to love and obey God. They do not honor God in their speech or actions. Basically they do what they want when they want to, and give neither God nor His word the time of day. They ignore God, giving only lip service to what is right.

The second are those who suppress the truth of God and of His word. While they know the truth they push it to the side, doing everything in their power to avoid it or get rid of it. They know the truth, but they continue to live their lives as they want, not as God’s word directs. In essence they want to get rid of God and His word, and live as though they succeeded in doing so.

In the end, God’s wrath is directed towards those who, while knowing better, want to live for themselves, and in the process stifle the truth of God’s word that holds them accountable.
