God’s Most Powerful Act

Consider the power of God.

Look at the sun and stars and contemplate the creation of the universe. In the creation account it says, “God set them in the expanse of the sky” (Genesis 1:17). It is in this expanse that we see what is considered by scientists to be the most powerful force known to man, the supernova. The amount of power produced during a supernova is said to be equal to the amount of energy expended by the Sun over its entire life.

Yet as powerful as a supernova is, and as immense as God’s power was in the creation of the universe, it doesn’t reach the power of the gospel message of Jesus Christ, and that’s because its power brings the greatest of all events, humanity’s salvation.

“I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile” (Romans 1:16).

The word power that the Apostle Paul uses is where we get our English word, “dynamite.” It is talking about the mighty, miraculous, explosive and energetic power of God.

And so, the power of God, who is Himself all-powerful, is wrapped up in the gospel message, the good news of Jesus’s sacrifice for humanity’s sin. And all this power is for the singular purpose for our salvation.

God has chosen His power not to bring punishment or destruction to humanity who openly rebels against Him, but rather His power brings salvation to bring us back into a right relationship with Him.

What is this power? God’s power of the gospel is the power of love.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

God’s power is wrapped up in the gospel, and it is a power that is available to everyone who will believe, Jew and Gentile (Romans 10:12-13).
