For Peace and Prosperity

For the good of God’s house, it was King David’s fervent desire for Jerusalem and her people to be blessed.

King David said, “I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go into the house of the Lord.’ … Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: ‘May they prosper who love you. Peace be within your walls, prosperity within your palaces.’ For the sake of my brethren and companions, I will now say, ‘Peace be within you.’ Because of the house of the Lord our God I will seek your good.” (Psalm 122:1-9)

David was looking forward to going to the temple, God’s house. But it dwelt within Jerusalem, and so for the good of God’s house and people, David sought the good of the city, that it would be a place of peace and prosperity.

I’d like to share with you several thoughts.

First, the church resides within communities. If we want to be effective, and for there to be that excitement for God’s house, we must seek the good of our community. We must seek its peace and prosperity or the church and God’s people will suffer.

Next, God’s house also resides within our spirits, which dwells within these bodies (1 Corinthians 6:19). In the same way we need to seek our own personal good that both our bodies and souls dwell peacefully and prosper.

Finally, Jerusalem may also represent the church, that is, the place where we gather together to seek the Lord. Jesus said where two or three are gathered in His name that He will then be amongst them (Matthew 18:20). If we want both the church and her people to have peace and prosper we must also seek out the good of the church, that is, the good of God’s people.

Let’s take time then to pray for the peace and prosperity of our communities and for one another so that we can look forward worshiping the Lord in peace.
