Eating God’s Word

Speak What You Eat

They say, “You are what you eat.” Whatever we ingest will reveal itself in our health and what we’ll become. But the Bible says it’s not what goes into the body that defiles, but what comes out through our speech that determines who we are (Luke 6:45).

God sent Ezekiel to the exiled Israelites to tell them God’s word for that time. But the words he was to speak were not to be his own, but God’s; hence God told him to eat the scroll written within and without which represents God’s word, for it was as sweet as honey to the taste.

“How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (Psalm 119:103 NKJV)

To make sure that Ezekiel would only speak God’s word, God basically made him mute until he had a word from God, and then the Lord would open his mouth to speak.

“But you, son of man, hear what I say to you … open your mouth and eat what I give you … eat this scroll, and go, speak to the house of Israel … I will make your tongue cling to the roof of your mouth, so that you shall be mute … But when I speak with you, I will open your mouth, and you shall say.” (Ezekiel 2:8; 3:1b, 26a, 27a NKJV)

Oh, how great would it be if we learned this lesson, that unless the Lord gives us a word, not to open up our mouths, because when we speak from our own understanding it brings only pain.

The Apostle James said that we are to be quick to hear and slow to speak and to anger, because the anger of man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God, (James 1:19-20).

And so before we open up our mouths to tell other people what we think, let’s make sure we feed on God’s word first so we can speak His word rather than our own.
