Today’s 333 Devotional: “Don’t Get Short Sheeted”
Most of you have either been the perpetrator or the victim of short sheeting. It’s where someone halved the bottom sheet on a bed making it look like it’s properly made and ready to take in the weary, but instead they find such rest impossible.
In a sense this is what God did to the children of Israel when they trusted Egypt to deliver them to His chastening element, the Babylonians, for their continual and blatant sin.
The Lord said, “For the bed is too short to stretch out on, and the covering so narrow that one cannot wrap himself in it.” (Isaiah 28:20)
This means that if we put our trust in anything other than God, whether it’s someone good, some godly organization, or even if it’s a church, it will come up short, that is, they will never give to us the peace or rest we desire.
It means any attempt to find rest and security apart from God is going to fail. It means no one will be able to stretch out in the ease and comfort of their beds to find warmth when they trust in the security of anyone or anything else apart from a personal relationship with the Lord God through His Son, Jesus Christ.
Jesus said, “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? … But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (Matthew 6:25, 33)
Solomon gives us this piece of advice. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 4:5-6)
