Today’s 333 Devotional: “Delightful Desires”
When we look around it seems like the wicked are becoming more prosperous, while those who seek to do right and live their lives based upon God’s word and ways are struggling.
But God tells us not to give this a second thought, because their ending will be devastating.
“Do not fret because of evildoers, nor be envious of the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.” (Psalm 37:1-2)
Let’s not allow ourselves to get worked up over their supposed gain, instead let’s trust in the Lord and make Him our joy.
“Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4)
We also need to make sure our desires line up with God, and not with our flesh.
“You want something but don’t get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.” (James 4:2-3)
When God asked Solomon what he wanted, Solomon responded by asking for wisdom and knowledge so he could rule God’s people well. And God gave him not only wisdom and knowledge, but also more, because his desire was a delight to God (2 Chronicles 1:1-12).
Therefore, we are not receiving the desires of our hearts, then it may be that we’re not delighting ourselves in the will and ways of God.
But when the Lord is our one and only delight, then we’ll want what brings Him glory and honor, rather than ourselves. And when we arrive at that place, then God will give us the desires of our hearts, because they will be His desires as well.
“Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you.” (Matthew 6:33)
