Today’s 333 Devotional: “Clean Up the Clutter”

Making God our number one priority calls for some interior house cleaning. And the first thing we need to do is to clean up all that is cluttering our lives.

Now, clutter can be just about anything that crowds Jesus out. Consider a teenager’s bedroom. There can come a time when they can no longer get in, and so they move to another room and start messing it up.

This spiritual clutter can be just about anything, like thoughts, habits, activities, relationships, work, TV, the Internet, or anything else that pushes God out.

It’s like what happens to our garages. They start out clean and well organized, with the ability to park both cars inside. But then comes this box and another. We start storing stuff for others or putting things out in the garage that we have nowhere else to put.

The garage then becomes filled with a bunch of stuff, and our cars, that which the garage was designed to house, are parked out on the street.

What we need is a spiritual garage sale to clean out all the unnecessary clutter; those things we’ve collected over the years, but no longer have any real value in God’s Kingdom.

How can we determine these areas of clutter for our lives? Simple, it’s by praying King David’s prayer.

“Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:23-24)

Once Jesus reveals these areas of clutter, take the necessary steps to remove them.

Jesus tells us that once we’ve put our hands to the plow, if we look back, if we allow the clutter to turn our heads from fully following after God, then we’ll never plow a straight line again, either for God or our lives (Luke 9:62).

So what clutter is hanging around in our spiritual garage that’s preventing Jesus from pulling in and parking?
