A Slave’s Benefit Plan

A benefit plan is something people receive upon retirement, and it’s based upon an employee’s earnings history.

In our spiritual lives, there’s another benefit plan, but it’s entirely based upon whom we live our life for.

“Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?” (Romans 6:16)

The Apostle Paul says we’re all slaves, ether to Satan, sin, and fleshly desires, or we’re God’s slaves. And to get his point across he asks the question of benefits, that is, is being a slave to sin worth it, since it really has no benefit.

“When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.” (Romans 6:20-22)

While there are temporal pleasures associated with sin, which the Bible describes as passing pleasures, these pleasures are not lasting; rather they deliver one heck of a hang over, and that is death.

“For the wages of sin is death.” (Romans 6:23a)

But there’s definitely a benefit to being God’s slave, and that is our sanctification, whose end is eternal life.

“But the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23b)

To partake of God’s benefits we need to transfer ownership. We need to die to our old selves and
sin’s fleshly desires, and allow ourselves to be raised up with and in Jesus.

“For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” (1 Corinthians 6:20)

We need to become slaves of God’s righteousness, and then God will give us His benefit plan.
