What Goes Around Comes Around

The old saying goes, “What goes around comes around.” In other words, actions have their consequences.

This was God’s message when He allowed the Medo-Persian army to pillage and plunder Babylon and the Chaldeans.

As the Babylonians had done to Judea, Jerusalem, and the Jews, God was now exacting the same punishment to them through the Medo-Persians.

“Shout against her all around; she has given her hand, her foundations have fallen, her walls are thrown down; for it is the vengeance of the Lord. Take vengeance on her. As she has done, so do to her.” (Jeremiah 50:15)

And so, the old saying holds that says, “What goes around comes around.” It’s a saying that is derived from the biblical admonition, “They sow the wind, and reap the whirlwind.” (Hosea 8:7)

This account should make us sit up and take notice when the Apostle Paul says not to imitate what is evil, but rather what is good (3 John 1:11).

You see, when we imitate evil, then evil is what we can expect in return, but when we do what is right and good, then this is what we can expect to receive from the Lord.

And while our actions will definitely have consequences here on earth, what we fail to appreciate is that they will also have eternal consequences as well.

Notice the words Jesus will use when we enter into judgment.

“Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.” (Matthew 25:40)

This may well have been at the heart of Jesus’ Golden Rule.

“Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 7:12)

Everyday take some time and ask the Lord to help you see the good in which you can do for others, and then ask the Lord to give you the courage to do it.
