A Soul Wait

Our hope is in the Lord, and upon the Lord we wait with expectant hearts. But our wait isn’t merely physical, it is spiritual and it is a wait from the soul of our very being.

In the Psalms we see such a soul wait.

“I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His word I do hope. My soul waits for the Lord More than those who watch for the morning … hope in the Lord; for with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him is abundant redemption.” (Psalm 130:5-7)

But as our soul waits, there are many diversions that present themselves as potential remedies, but they are merely Band-Aid solutions. But the soul that waits upon the Lord and within His word, the Bible, is a soul that will find redemption and relief.

Just as when we wake up in the early morning hours and see the beginnings of light on the horizon, hope for the light of the coming day awakens within us. That is the hope of the soul that waits upon the Lord. As the soul sees the beginnings of God’s grace in our Savior, so the soul longs for the fullness of God’s abundant redemption from sin and death.

God’s promise is that His eye is always upon those who fear Him, upon those who hope in His mercy, and He will deliver their soul from death (Psalm 33:18-19a).

And with this promise the Psalmist said, “Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield.” (Psalm 33:20)

Later King David said, “Truly my soul silently waits for God; from Him comes my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved.” (Psalm 62:1-2)

It is when our soul waits upon the Lord that His gift of grace is at work within us; bringing us the hope we need, a hope He has promised from His word.
