Today’s 333 Devotional: “Are We Aware”
In Genesis 28, Jacob was at His lowest point. He was on the run and to save his life, seeing that Esau was out to kill him, his parents told him to leave his home in Beersheba and set out for Harran. When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones he found there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep.
But then in a dream, Jacob saw a stairway reaching up into heaven with angels ascending and descending upon it with the Lord speaking of His promise to Jacob to always be with him, along with the same promise that He spoke to His father, Isaac, and grandfather, Abraham.
“I am the Lord God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants … Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.” (Genesis 28:13-15)
In verse 16 we are told that Jacob awoke and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” (Genesis 28:16)
Jacob was unaware to God’s presence. Even at this lowest point. Jacob thought that He was all alone, but the reality is that God was always there, Jacob was just not aware of this reality.
Jacob thought God was far away, but then he learned that God is near.
We too can go through life unaware of God’s presence, but he is always closer than we think, even when we are not aware of it.
Jesus used Jacob’s dream referring to Himself. And then in our need to go and share the gospel He said, “and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)
