This Little Light of Mine

Today’s 333 Devotional: “This Little Light of Mine”

I remember as a child singing the old gospel song, “This Little Light of Mine.” The chorus goes,

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine,

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine,

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine,

Let it shine, Let it shine, Let it shine.

I wonder if we’ve forgotten the simple meaning of the song. This is something the Apostle Paul encouraged the church never to forget.

“Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life.” (Philippians 2:14-16)

The song continues saying, “Hide it under a bushel? No! I’m going let it shine.”

God expects us to be His flashlights, His lighthouses, and His light bulbs to light up this sin darkened, lost, and dying world. And the one thing Jesus tells us to do is to keep His light lit.

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

The song continues saying, “Don’t let Satan blow it out, I’m gonna let it shine.”

And so today, let’s sing this children’s song and allow it to remind us to let the light of Jesus Christ shine through us, and not to allow Satan to diminish it through our sinful and self-centered actions.

The Bible says, “Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and those who turn many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever.” (Daniel 12:3)
