Today’s 333 Devotional: “How Low Will We Go”

When David successfully brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, it says that he stripped down to his skivvies and danced before the Lord with all his might. When his wife, Michal, saw this, she despised him in her heart because of his unseemly behavior.

But David said, “It was before the Lord, who chose me … and I will be even more undignified than this, and will be humble in my own sight.” (2 Samuel 6:21a, 22a)

This begs the question, “How low are we willing to go in our worship of God?” Are we willing to humble ourselves in the sight of others in our worship of God?

Way too often we think more highly of ourselves than we really should, and when we start despising others in their worship of God thinking we’re the only ones who really know how to worship, then we’ll end up like Michal, who displeased God by her actions ending up barren.

Instead, we must be willing to put aside our ego and think of ourselves as servants instead of masters.

Jesus said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant.” (Matthew 20:25-26)

In fact, Jesus gave to us the ultimate example of humility as He took upon Himself the lowest position amongst servants when He picked up a towel and began washing the disciples’ feet, telling us that we need to do the same.

“If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.” (John 13:14-15)

So, we must be willing to humble ourselves in the sight of God and then He will lift us up (James 4:10).
