Thought For Today: “The Blessings of Affliction”
It is through affliction that the greatest lessons are learned. This truth has been echoed by some of Christianity’s greatest preachers.
When Samuel Rutherford, a Scottish pastor and theologian from the 1600’s found himself in the cellars of affliction, he said, “The Great King keeps his wine there.”
Charles Spurgeon, an English pastor from the 1800’s, said, “They who dive in the sea of affliction bring up rare pearls.”
The Apostle Paul said, “And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” (Romans 5:3-5)
The Apostle James said, “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.” (James 1:2-4)
Whatever we’re going through God has a purpose and a plan, not to harm us, but rather it is to help us gain both a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11).
