Today’s 333 Devotional: “Men Make Lousy Gods”

The prophet Jeremiah talks about how ridiculous it is to worship anything other than God (Jeremiah 10:3-5). He talks about how men cut down trees fashioning their own gods. They dress them up only to fasten them to something solid lest they fall. So, what kind of god needs human help?

Idolatry has evolved over the years, but it always revolved around being made by humans. Today, this kind of idolatry is seen in the possessions we covet.

But idolatry has taken a disturbing turn. We no longer worship stuff made by humans; rather we worship humans, the maker of the stuff. Humanity mistakenly thinks since they create, they’re on the same plateau has the Creator Himself.

And when we make a comparison of the two, we come up with this conclusion; men make lousy gods.

Take for instance what man creates. He creates what will be obsolete in a couple of years, whereas God creates that which lasts until the end of time. What can man create that compares to the Universe?

And then there is humanity’s lifespan. Man’s average lifespan is now between 70 to 80 years old while God has always been and will forever be. He is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End (Revelation 22:13).

There’s also the inhumanity that humanity perpetrates upon itself, living lives of unforgiveness and resentment, while God always forgives, and always extending grace and mercy when wronged.

And what about the wisdom of man as compared to the wisdom of God? Is there any comparison? In fact, God’s ways and thoughts are far above that of men, or as the Lord says, “As high as the heavens are above the earth.” (Isaiah 55:9)

The final straw is when we make ourselves experts of what’s right and wrong completely dismissing God and His word.

Jeremiah made this conclusion, which is the same conclusion that we must also make, “There is none like You, O Lord” (Jeremiah 10:6).
