A Wardrobe Malfunction
February 3, 2023

Today’s 333 Devotional: “A Wardrobe Malfunction”

We’ve got this whole idea of a wardrobe malfunction wrong. It’s not that our clothing has failed to function properly, but rather we’ve got the wrong clothing on to begin with.

But rather than getting caught up in what clothing is proper, there’s something far deeper that needs to be addressed, and that’s what we’re wearing spiritually.

As Christians we’re told to take off the old wardrobe which consists of who we were before we came to faith in Jesus Christ. At the same time, we’re to put on a completely new set of clothing, that is, the new man or woman we’ve been created to become.

The Apostle Paul said, “Put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.” (Ephesians 4:22-24)

Instead of wearing these garments of righteousness and holiness, the children of Israel were guilty of wearing foreign garments, garments not in line with God. Instead, they entered the temple with garments of violence, hypocrisy, and compliancy saying, “The Lord will not do good, nor will He do evil.” (Zephaniah 1:12b)

They had a wardrobe malfunction, they were wearing the wrong clothes, and so the Lord said, “I will punish the princes and the king’s children, and all such as are clothed with foreign apparel.” (Zephaniah 1:8)

Things haven’t changed much today, instead of taking off the clothing of our former selves, we’ve learned the art of layering. We add to our old clothes the new clothes of Christ and end up wearing what is unrecognizable to God.

When we layer in such a way, we become what we’re accused of being by others, hypocrites, and we find ourselves complacent to the sins of the world around us.

So, let’s begin to start wearing the right wardrobe, and start putting on Christ.
