Thought For Today: “Forgiveness is Unconditional”
Forgiveness isn’t, “I’ll forgive you if…” Whenever we attach a condition to forgiveness it really isn’t forgiveness. Real forgiveness is unconditional, that is, forgiveness doesn’t place any conditions on the other person to forgive them.
Forgiveness is never something that is earned. Nor is forgiveness something that others or we deserve. Rather forgiveness is to be extended whether someone asks or wants it.
Consider for a moment the forgiveness offered to us by Jesus. His forgiveness is solely based on His love, whether or not we deserve it, which we don’t.
Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” (Luke 23:34)
We never asked to be forgiven, in fact, we weren’t even there, but Jesus offered forgiveness, nonetheless. He took the initiative and forgave, and that’s exactly what we need to do.
