Today’s 333 Devotional: “Heavenly Wisdom”

With everything we are facing today in the world, in our nation and communities, not to mention our workplaces and family, confusion seems to be the order of the day. We are constantly trying to make sense of life that is constantly changing, and we find ourselves with nothing to hold on to.

How are we to handle the complexities of life, not to mention the day-to-day grind?

What we need is wisdom, but not just any wisdom; we need wisdom from above, God’s wisdom.

The Apostle James contrasts two types of wisdom, earthly and heavenly.

Earthly wisdom, James says, comes from the devil and harbors bitter jealously and selfish ambition covering up the truth with boasting and lies. But heavenly wisdom comes down from God and is pure, peaceable, humble, gentle, full of mercy and good deeds (James 3:13-17).

How can we receive this heavenly wisdom?

  1. Desire God’s wisdom above all else.

The Bible says, “Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. Esteem her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you.” (Proverbs 4:7-8)

The Bible also says to search for wisdom as you would search for silver and hidden treasure (Proverbs 2:4), which leads me to the second point.

  1. Go to where wisdom resides.

God has given to us His wisdom in His Word.

The Psalmist said God’s word is a lamp to light our way and the path that is before us (Psalm 119:105).

King David writes, “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.” (Psalm 19:7)

But what good is having all of God’s wisdom at our fingertips and not avail ourselves of it?

  1. Ask God for His wisdom.

The Apostle James said, “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5)
