A Scripture and a Prayer: “Deliverance”
“I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one.” (John 17:15)
Prayer:
Lord, there is so much talk about being delivered from sickness, evil, or a bad situation that we find ourselves in. But what got me thinking is, “Do we understand what Your deliverance looks like?” Jesus, You have given to us what You see as deliverance, and then how we are to pray for deliverance. In Your prayer to the Father, You didn’t ask for us to be delivered out of, but rather from. Earlier, You said that in this world we will experience all types of tribulation, but gave us the encouragement that we do not need to allow these to defeat us, but rather that the enemy of our souls, Satan, the one who is the author of evil, has been overcome. And so, Your prayer for us is what true deliverance looks like, which is that the Father should keep us from evil, and hence, the evil one, Satan. Thank you, therefore, for Your deliverance, especially Your deliverance from sin and death. And Father, I ask this in Jesus’s name. AMEN
