Thought for Today: “Putting Death to Death”
When Jesus said, “It is finished,” and died upon the cross, He forgave and put to death our sin. And when He rose from the dead, He put death to death. More literally, death died.
Jesus foretold this ending to death when He raised Lazarus from the dead.
Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.” (John 11:25–26)
This is the good news. Jesus conquered not only sin upon the cross, but when He rose from the dead, He conquered death as well. And since death could no longer hold Him, everyone who believes in Him death can no longer hold as well.
Therefore, we have nothing to fear. Death hasn’t taken a holiday; it’s been forever eradicated for those who believe. All it takes is belief in Jesus. And so, to Mary and Martha, Lazarus’s sisters, and then to all of us, Jesus says, “Do you believe this? (John 11:26)
