The Disappointment of More
November 8, 2022

Today’s 333 Devotional: “The Disappointment of More”

There are two things that are never satisfied, death and sin, but our appetite for more is never sated.

Solomon said, “Hell and Destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.” (Proverbs 27:20)

More for the sake of having more only brings disappointment and discontentment. So, the question arises, “Whom are we working for?”

According to Solomon, to work for fame and fortune only to give it to another is a fruitless endeavor, because in the end someone else not even related to you will end up receiving what you worked so hard for.

“There is one alone, without companion: He has neither son nor brother. Yet there is no end to all his labors, nor is his eye satisfied with riches. But he never asks, ‘For whom do I toil and deprive myself of good?’ This also is vanity and a grave misfortune.” (Ecclesiastes 4:8)

There are many good and noble causes, and there is the need to work and earn a living to care for self and family. But ultimately to what end?

It’s a good thing to work and pass down an inheritance to our children, but are we passing down a legacy as well? To pass down a legacy we need to ask the question of whom are we working for?

As believers in Jesus Christ, we are no longer working for the same boss as when we did while in the world, that is, Satan, but rather we’re now working for a new boss, the Lord.

“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.” (Colossians 3:23-24)

Let’s live and work for something that’s greater than ourselves or what the world has to offer.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)
