Thought For Today: “Past Tense Faith”
Are we in danger of having past tense faith?
After Jesus’s death and burial, a couple of disciples were on their way to Emmaus dejected and without hope.
They said, “We had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place.” (Luke 24:21)
It had now been three days since their hope was shattered because Jesus didn’t fulfill their expectations even though they had been told that the tomb was empty.
But then Jesus showed up and said, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe.”
Are we close to having Jesus say this to us? Are we slow to believe the promises of God when they are not fulfilled our way? Are we in danger of saying, “We trusted,” instead of “We trust in spite of the delay?”
