Today’s 333 Devotional: “Keys of the Kingdom”
“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 16:19; 18:18)
Some say this was only given to the Apostle Peter and his successors for church governance. Later, however, in Jesus’s instruction on dealing with a sinning brother or sister, this power to bind and loose was given to believers as a weapon of prayer. Jesus said that if two agree on anything and then ask our heavenly Father, He will grant the request because, “where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)
What I believe is that Jesus is saying that we have the power to bind the powers of darkness and sin from the lives of those who are caught in its deadly trap, and loose over them the power of God’s deliverance. And this is done through our time in prayer, one with another and in agreement with God’s word.
We are to bind the powers of darkness that continue to wreak havoc in the lives of our family and friends fully believing that what is thus bound on earth is then bound in heaven, and that Satan can no longer use any of these things in his accusations.
And then, in like manner, we need to loose the power of righteousness and of the Holy Spirit in our midst to render impotent the powers of sin and darkness.
The key to these keys of binding and loosing is our belief. Do we believe?
After Jesus cursed the fig tree, it says it immediately withered and died. The disciples marveled at this, and so Jesus said that if we have faith and do not doubt, greater things than this we will be able to do.
And then Jesus said, “If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.” (Matthew 21:22)
