Today’s 333 Devotional: “Get A Running Start”
Continuing our illustration of the track and field sport of pole-vaulting and our need to live above the bar instead of beneath it, is our need to get a running start. A pole-vaulter can’t clear the bar by standing still.
When David went to battle Goliath, he wasn’t hesitant or doubtful. He literally ran to meet Goliath in battle. Even though Goliath had military might and skill, David believed he had the edge because he came to battle in God’s name. Therefore, David had complete confidence in the victory.
David lived life above the bar.
The Bible talks about our need to get a running start, not towards evil, but towards God, and we do this by moving forward in His word.
The Psalmist said, “I run in the path of Your commands, for You have set my heart free.” (Psalm 119:32)
When we run in the pathway of God’s word, God will send us His word quickly and set our hearts free
“He sends His command to the earth; His word runs swiftly.” (Psalm 147:15)
The writer of Hebrews tells us we are to run the race set before us, but we also need to throw off, that is confess and repent, all the sin and weight that weighs us down (Hebrews 12:1).
We all know those sins that are in our lives, but what about those things that weigh us down?
If you notice anything about pole-vaulters, they strip down to their shorts and tee shirt. They don’t jump in their sweats because that adds extra weight preventing them from making it over the bar.
The same goes for us. There’s a lot of junk we continue to hold onto to, and while it might not be sin, it is preventing us from being everything God created us to be. It prevents us from getting above the bar.
So, let’s get rid of the unimportant stuff, and let’s start running in God’s word, will and ways.
