Appearances Deceive

Today’s 333 Devotional: “Appearances Deceive”

Things aren’t always as they appear. An open or closed door doesn’t necessarily mean God opened or closed it. And having a peace about something doesn’t always mean it’s God’s peace.

This was Israel’s downfall when it looked like everything was now starting to go their way. They had two impressive victories under their belt, Jericho, and Ai, and it looked like nothing could stop them.

The next people group on their hit list would have been the Gibeonites, but it says the Gibeonites deceived them by sending ambassadors looking like they had come a long distance wanting to make a peace treaty, buttering them up, so to say, by talking about their impressive victory over Egypt.

To accomplish this ruse, they put on old worn-out clothes and shoes, put in their beat up saddlebags stale bread, along with old patched water bottles. It says Joshua and the Israelite leaders examined the evidence and made a peace treaty with them, but never consulted the Lord about the matter (Joshua 9:1-15).

Three days later they found out the truth, and because of their oath they had to spare the Gibeonite cities, but they made the Gibeonites into their slaves.

Neither Joshua nor Israel learned the lesson of Ai; don’t do anything until you first consult the Lord. Israel thought that since they had defeated Jericho, Ai would be a piece of cake, but they were defeated at their first foray.

And now, immediately after this invaluable lesson they again forgot to consult the Lord.

No matter how things may look, or even if we have received a peace about something, we are always to consult the Lord and make sure that whatever peace we may have received lines up with God’s word. If not, then it’s not of God, but Satan.

The Apostle John said, “Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” (1 John 4:1)
