Today’s 333 Devotional: “A Little Help Here”
Whenever I think of our need to help one another as believers, an unusual song pops up in my head. It was written in 1967 by the Beatles entitled, “With a Little Help from My Friends.” Its chorus line is “I get by with a little help from my friends.”
While the Beatles didn’t write this to promote biblical values, it’s definitely seen in the Scriptures.
When Israel was entering the Promised Land, there were two and a half tribes that requested the land on the East side of the Jordan. But the deal was if God gave them this land, they’d have to go in before their brothers and fight for them.
“But you shall cross before your brothers in battle array, all your valiant warriors, and shall help them, until the Lord gives your brothers rest, as He gives you, and they also possess the land which the Lord your God is giving them. Then you shall return to your own land.” (Joshua 1:14b-15)
Joshua is reminding the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh of their vow to go before their brothers and help them take the land, just as God helped to give them the land they were possessing.
We are called to help one another with the same help God gave to us that allowed us the victory in our own lives.
The Apostle Paul taught that in the same way we received God’s grace to overcome that we are to extend that same grace to others.
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)
To the Galatians Paul said it like this, “Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)
