Today’s 333 Devotional: “A Soul Pep Talk”
Are you beside yourself?”
This phrase describes someone who is depressed over present circumstances because it was believed that the sol and body could separate under great emotional stress.
This seems to be what’s going on in King David’s life.
“Vindicate me, O God, and plead my cause … oh, deliver me from the deceitful.” (Psalm 43:1)
With everything King David was going through, he often felt like God had cast him off and rejected him. He felt like this because in his mind God didn’t immediately rise up to his cause and help to deliver him. David, therefore, felt like God had withdrawn the light of His presence.
But this is in appearance only. God never cast off His people; they are always in His love and care, even though it may not seem like it at the time. Even when God disciplines us, it’s always out of His love for us (Hebrews 12:6).
And while David knew this reality, deep down in His soul it was a different matter. So, David literally had to talk to His soul, to give his soul a pep talk, reminding Himself of God’s love.
David said to His soul, “For You are the God of my strength … send out Your light and Your truth! Let them lead me; let them bring me to Your holy hill and to Your tabernacle. Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy; and on the harp I will praise You, O God, my God.” (Psalm 43:2a, 3-4)
David, therefore, knowing that it’s the Lord God who is His strength, truth, and joy reassures his soul asking and declaring, “Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God.” (Psalm 43:5)
Today, if you’re feeling depressed and beside yourself, remind your soul of God’s love for you.
