Today’s 333 Devotional: “Faith Trumps Despair”
“I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” (Psalm 27:13)
David’s adversaries were spreading false reports about him, so much so that if David’s faith in God hadn’t been so deeply established and firmly entrenched, he would have fallen into extreme despair and severe depression.
By faith David saved himself from despair that threatened to grab hold of his soul.
Jesus understood the reality of this in Peter life, and of how Satan wanted to continue to toss him about as if he were wheat being sifted through a strainer. And so, Jesus was praying for Peter that his faith wouldn’t fail (Luke 22:32).
There has always been and will always be those who have and will come against us, not only in who we are as a person, but also what we are doing for the Lord, that is, our ministries. They will spread lies to bring us down while boosting themselves up in the court of public opinion.
When this happens, we have a tendency to despair, and if we’re not careful we can fall into deep depression.
The antidote is to know that Jesus is praying for us and that He is our advocate in heaven. We then need to have our faith established and entrenched in the goodness of God and in His word, way, and will for our lives.
The Lord says, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
When these times of trials come, we need to pray that God will give us that extra measure of faith to see us through to the end. But also, we need that certain expectation that God’s plans for us are good, and that He will see us through, not only to heaven, but also for right now.
