Keeping Sin Under Control

Today’s 333 Devotional: “Keeping Sin Under Control”

“Wait, did I just hear pastor Dennis say we need to keep sin under control? We don’t need to keep sin under control, we need to get rid of it!”

But wait; look at what God says to Cain. “If you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.” (Genesis 4:7)

Cain became upset when God didn’t accept his sacrifice, and instead approved the sacrifice offered by Abel. Cain became envious and jealous, and God confronted Cain telling him that sin was crouching at the door of his heart and that sin wanted to control him, but Cain could “master it.”

We are all born with the sin nature. King David said we are actually conceived with this sin nature (Psalm 51:5). Yet, what God says to Cain gives us hope; that even though sin resides in our hearts we don’t have to allow it to control us.

But how?

By faith in Christ: “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions–it is by grace you have been saved.” (Ephesians 2:4-5)

Through confession: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

By turning away from sin (repentance): “As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die?” (Ezekiel 33:11)

We no longer need to allow sin to reign over our lives. To master sin, we must first turn our lives over to Jesus Christ, confess and repent of our sinful actions and thoughts, and then take these thoughts captive before they turn into sin (1 Corinthians 10:5).
