Thought For Today: “The Ministry of Old Age”
Let’s not despise old age and those who have lived through the trials and tribulations of life. They have much to give and a lot of wisdom to share.
“Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God, till I declare Your power to the next generation, Your might to all who are to come.” (Psalm 71:18)
While we often quote Paul telling Timothy not to let anyone despise his youth, we often despise the elderly and the wisdom they bring. We’re a culture that looks to the youth, even within the church.
But with age come wisdom. As a body of believers, let’s honor and take time to listen to those who have done what we are attempting to do now.
For those of us who are no longer in the prime of lives, let’s purpose to speak life and encouragement into the next generation that is following. Let’s not allow the trials and tribulations of our past cool the passion of our youth.
Further, for those of us who are mature in years, let’s not just be content to sit in the pews saying, “I’ve done my time, now let someone else step up.” Remember, Caleb was around 85 years old and still going strong.
“Here I am this day, eighty-five years old. As yet I am as strong this day as on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war, both for going out and for coming in. Now therefore, give me this mountain.” (Joshua 14:10b-12a)
