Today’s 333 Devotional: “Sin Uses The Law”
The law gives sin an opportunity to be used against us. Sin is not within the law; rather it is separate from it. But what the law does is stirs and awakens sin to work its evil desires.
Note what the Apostle Paul says, “But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For apart from the law sin was dead.” (Romans 7:8).
You see, sin is not in the law, rather it’s in us, and when told not to do something, the sin nature within gets all worked up and wants to do it anyway. The evil desire becomes so strong that a person just has to do what they know they shouldn’t.
The law doesn’t force a person to sin; rather it’s the person that takes the law and breaks it, deliberately going against what it says.
This is at the heart of what Paul goes on to say, “For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin. For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.” (Romans 7:14-15)
And so, while the law doesn’t contain sin, it does contain the knowledge of sin (Romans 3:20).
The law also contains the knowledge of what God requires to make us right with Him, which is through the blood sacrifice, but not of animals, but rather the sacrifice of His Son.
“But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins. Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: ‘Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but a body You have prepared for Me.’” (Hebrews 10:3-5)
Jesus said, “You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.” (John 5:39)
