Today’s 333 Devotional: “A Dead Issue”
The law is a dead issue to believers in Jesus Christ.
The Apostle Paul talks about our relationship to the law by using the illustration of the law of marriage, that if a spouse is alive, then they are bound by the law to remain in the marriage. But if that spouse dies, then they are freed from that law (Romans 7:1-3).
Before coming into the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, the believer was married to the law, but since entering into the relationship with Christ, a believer is married and united to Christ. Therefore, while the old marriage is dead, the new one is alive and active.
Believers are now dead to the law and the law is dead to them. They are no longer under the law because of what Jesus Christ did for them upon the cross. They’re free from the law because of Jesus’s death.
“Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another–to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.” (Romans 7:4)
The believer is dead to the law through the body of Christ that died upon the cross. That is, the believer has been put to death in Christ, and therefore the law has nothing to hold on to. And being dead in Christ has freed the believer from the law, which includes its guilt and punishment.
“Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.’” (Galatians 3:13)
“And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight.” (Colossians 1:21-22)
So, the law is now a dead issue as we’ve become alive in Christ.
