Thought For Today: “Spiritual Worship”
We view our worship as external, where God views our worship internally. This was something David knew intimately, and something we need to learn. Look at what David said.
“For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart – these, O God, You will not despise.” (Psalm 51:16-17)
To the Jews, the heart of worship rested in the Temple and in the sacrifices that were offered. But David knew that the worship of God was more than merely sacrifices. He knew that the worship God wanted was worship from the heart, a heart and spirit that was broken and crushed over its sinful condition. (Remember that David wrote this after his affair with Bathsheba.)
Why is all this important? Well, it’s because it is only when we are a worshipper that we’ll understand where the real battle lays. You see David won the battle with Goliath long before he met Goliath on the field.
He wrestled with Satan and won, long before he fought Goliath.
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12)
Therefore, our worship needs to be spiritual because our warfare is spiritual.
