Before Becoming a Warrior

Today’s 333 Devotional: “Before Becoming a Warrior”

In the maxim we repeat every Sunday at Living Waters Fellowship we say that we are mighty men and women of valor. But there is something that we must be before we become a warrior, that is, what can help turn us into mighty men and women of valor.

Prior to the David and Goliath story, there is another part of David’s life that actually led to his great victory over Goliath.

You see, the first thing that David was known for wasn’t his fighting prowess, although killing a lion and a bear is no easy feat. Rather, David was first known as a worshipper of God. In fact, He is actually known more as a worshipper than a warrior, and to verify that fact, all we need to do is look at the Psalms.

And so, first we must be worshippers, before we become warriors.

We see this in Saul’s servant’s description of David.

“Then one of the servants answered and said, “Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the Lord is with him.” (1 Samuel 16:18)

It was in His worship of the Lord where David’s first opportunity to serve God came. What we are told is that whenever the distressing spirit, which was sent by God, fell upon Saul, he sent for David to come and worship God in his presence. And it says that Saul became refreshed and renewed when David worshipped God. (1 Samuel 16:23).

Our battle begins not in the mission field, rather it begins in our quite time before the Lord. The Holy Spirit’s anointing upon our witness and ministry first flows from our quite time, our worship of the Lord.

Therefore, like David, we need to first be worshipers before we can become warriors.

In today’s thought, “How Would We Define Worship,” we’ll look at this.
