Thought for Today: “Desire To Be A Disciple”
In Jesus quintessential definition of what it means to be a disciple, and then our need to take up our crosses daily to follow Him, He began this verse by saying, “If anyone desires to come after Me.” (Luke 9:23a)
What I’ve learned over the years is that discipleship doesn’t happen by osmosis. We don’t become a believer in Jesus Christ by raising our hand in service to accept Him, and think that we’re now fully functional and operational.
Instead, there must be a sincere desire on our part, and when there’s a sincere desire coupled with a commitment, then we’ll accomplish the goal Jesus has set before us.
There’s a verse I love. It tells us that this whole thing call discipleship is a packaged deal, in that it takes both a sincere desire on our part and a commitment to the process.
“Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass.” (Psalm 37:4-5)
If you sincerely desire to be a follower of Jesus Christ, then you must make that commitment to become one, that’s when discipleship gets really exciting; that’s when discipleship, becoming like Jesus Christ, becomes a pure joy.
So, dare to desire to be a disciple.
