To Serve or Not To Serve

Thought For Today: “To Serve or Not To Serve”

There are many times the word, “servant,” and “serve,” occur in the New Testament referring to a believer’s responsibility within the body of Christ, the church. In other words, it’s not about us, but rather it’s about Christ and our serving Him by serving others.

The Bible says, “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.” (Philippians 2:3)

Jesus said, “So the last will be first, and the first last.” (Matthew 20:16)

The Apostle Paul gives us this example saying that just as God in His great mercy comforts us through our times of difficulty, we are to then in turn serve others by comforting them as God has comforted us (2 Corinthians 1:4).

Jesus Himself gives us the example by which we are to live by. On the last night before His death at the Passover meal, Jesus picked up a water basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, which was the lowest position within the servants of a house.

And then Jesus said, “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.” (John 13:14-15)

So, coming to church isn’t about being served, rather it’s about serving others with the same love and grace God has shown to us. And please understand, it’s not a choice to serve or not to serve, rather it’s about to serve, period.
