Thought For Today: “The Idol of the Human Heart”
When identifying what our idols may be, let’s begin by taking a good long look at ourselves. Today’s idols may just be ourselves, and how we idolize our own needs. It seems that today it’s all about “me, myself, and I.”
It’s now become all about “me;” rather than what’s best for others, or worse, our families or spouses. Now the rationale behind this behavior is that we need to take care of ourselves and our own well-being, because this helps others, that is, it improves our care of others.
Sounds good, but it egocentric. It’s where we want to work on ourselves rather than on our marriages or relationships.
Forget “American Idol,” we’re actually becoming our own idols. This is the sad reality in some of the teachings from churches today.
Instead, let’s take a look at what the Bible says, “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:3-4)
In the end, if we stop this idol worship of ourselves, then we will be the ones exalted in the eyes of God.
Jesus said, “For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” (Luke 14:11)
