Thought For Today: “Can’t Sleep?”
Getting and staying asleep today is big business. We see ads for all sorts of sleep aides, from prescription to over-the-counter drugs, mattresses that cool or heat and that form to our body’s unique contours. All so that we can have a good night’s sleep.
But what I have found is that the Lord gives to those who are His, those that He calls His beloved, sleep, and we are to let Him be our sleep aide (Psalm 127:2).
However, if you are like me, I really don’t sleep that long, and I often find myself up in the middle of the night. But I know that there is a reason because God loves to give us rest and sleep, and is we are awake, it is often one of two things.
It may well be anxiety and worry over what has gone on that day, or what awaits us tomorrow. But God’s word says, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)
At other times God will wake us up, or not allow us to go to sleep because there’s something He wants to say. So, take time in prayer and in His word to find out what it is.
This was the Psalmist plight when He said “You hold my eyelids open … I call to remembrance my song in the night; I meditate within my heart, and my spirit makes diligent search.” (Psalm 77:4-6)
So, in the end, if we can’t sleep, prayer is always the best prescription.
