Thought for Today: “What A Wonderful World It Would Be”

While Louis Armstrong sang what some would say was his anthem song, “What a Wonderful World,” what I always think about when I hear this phrase, is the show “What a Wonderful Life.”

This 1946 film starred James Stewart as George Bailey, a young man whose dream it was to build a better community was dashed. He attempted suicide on Christmas Eve when an angel named “Clarence” stepped in and showed him what life in that little town of Bedford Falls would have been like if he had never been born.

George Baily went beyond to help his neighbors, and a community of love was built.

The Bible talks about that our responsibility for others goes beyond all ordinary standards. Not only are we responsible to do no harm, but also, we are also responsible to prevent harm when it is in our power to do so.

This is seen in a very simple yet profound verse.

“If you see your brother’s ox or sheep straying, do not ignore it but be sure to take it back to him.” (Deuteronomy 22:1)

This is probably brought out to its fullest extent in Jesus’s declaration of the second most important law of God, which is like the first; “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:39)

What a wonderful world this would be if we followed these rules, which is nothing less than an outworking of our loving God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength.
