Today’s 333 Devotional: “Idolatry: A Serious Affront”
Why is idolatry such a serious affront today, seeing that we live in a civilized society?
It all comes down to our worship of God because our worship of God is completely predicated on who He is to us. We tend to worship God based upon our mental image of who He is.
Therefore, it is important that we have a right concept and understanding of God. The Apostle Paul said that in Him we live, and move, and have our being (Acts 17:28).
Idolatry is then having the wrong concept of God. It assumes that God is something other than what He truly is. It substitutes who God is based upon one made in our own image and likeness. The scary thing is this new god conforms to the mind of the one that created it.
This is why idolatry is a serious affront to God, and so the Lord asks, “How can you possibly think that I am even like you?” (Psalm 50:21)
To the prophet Isaiah the Lord said, “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways. For as the heavens are higher than the earth. So are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts then your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9)
And so, idolatry doesn’t just consist of kneeling before some visible object; it’s also our thoughts about God that have nothing to do with who He is.
The Apostle Paul said that even though they knew Him as God, they never glorified Him, but rather became vain in their imaginations, thus darkening their unthankful and foolish hearts (Romans 1:21). They then fashioned idols after their own imagine, of the birds of the air, or the beasts of the field.
Idolatry is wrong ideas about God in which we act out as if they were true.
We therefore need to purify and elevate our concept and understanding of God to where it is once again worthy of the Lord.
